As the teens approach St. Clair County Jail in Belleville, IL, they get a taste of the stark realities they'll face during the "Scared Straight" juvenile intervention program.

The teens are greeted at the jail by a row of barking guard dogs.

Officer McPeak introduces the teens to the red line that runs through the facility. The act of crossing that line constitutes an assault on an officer, and is not tolerated.

14 year-old David, constantly in trouble at school and home for fighting, begins to realize that today may not be the cakewalk he was expecting.

Inmates prepare a decidedly unappetizing meal for the rest of the facility.

The teens are disgusted by the food, and not happy to learn that, if imprisoned, they wouldn't just be eating that stuff, they'd be preparing and serving it, too.

Officers make room so the inmates can give the teens a preview of the kind of stress and pressure they would feel were they to be incarcerated.

One inmate implores the teens, at high volume, to reconsider and appreciate the lives they have on the outside.

A room full of inmates looking down at you can be an intimidating sight.

Unfortunately for the teens, they're about to learn that they are far from the toughest individuals in the facility as Officer Shan Collins introduces them to "Ice M.F. Mike" and "Hustle Man."

Toward the end of the visit, the teens have an opportunity to sit down and engage in more of a conversation with the guards and inmates.

Renee, in glasses, and David recall a fight they had at school that got them suspended. The inmates are quick to point out how silly it was and how serious the consequences could have been.

19 year-old inmate, Danielle, also awaiting trial for a 1st degree murder charge, opens up to the teens, telling them how much she misses her children.

The day in jail and time spent with inmates and guards has helped some of the teens to stop and reconsider their actions.

Officer Tim tries her best with Eddie, but can't seem to get through. She knows, however, that there is a surprise waiting for him and the other teens outside that just might be the shock to the system that they need.
